Students at Lindenhurst's Alleghany Ave. school dance up a storm

2006-02-02 / Schools/Sports

Students at Lindenhurst’s Alleghany Avenue Elementary School know how to celebrate. After a week of intensive ELA testing, the students let loose by dancing up a storm. As part of an Arts-In-Education program sponsored by the Alleghany PTA, students were exposed to an exhilarating multicultural dance performance by members of the Phyllis Rose Dance Company. The troupe showcased many dances from across the world, from Cuba’s Cha-Cha to the Dominican Republic’s Meringue. The dancers also demonstrated the 64 Sword Tai Chi Dance, as well dances that originated in Uganda and Kenya.

The students not only had the chance to observe the performance, but were also given the opportunity to show off their own moves for their fellow classmates. Students learned moves from traditional African dances, as well as steps from the hiphop genre. Some students were so talented that they have a future with the Phyllis Rose Dance Company!
