John Goudie, former police officer and WWII Veteran
John Goudie worked as a Lindenhurst Village Police Officer for many years before transferring to the Amityville Police Department until his retirement in 1980. At that time, he was the most decorated member of the Department.
John Joseph Goudie died January 15, 2006 at the Claremont Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
“He was a cops cop who had a great memory for matching names and faces,” said Amity Police Chief Woodrow Cromarty. “Even after his retirement he remained the most decorated officer for 25 years. He was also the first officer to ever receive the Bravery Bar in Amtyville because he talked a man out of shooting him at point blank range.” Chief Cromarty said they would miss Mr. Goudie’s sparkling personality and even affectionaelty nicknamed him “Bumper Morgan,” after a well-known cop character.
Born to George and Anna (Keeley) in Manhattan, he was raised in Corona, Queens and later served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He joined the police department after moving to Long Island and relocated to Hellsboro, West Virginia after his retirement. He eventually settled in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
Mr. Goudie was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Carlisle, a member of the Amityville Policeman Benevolent Associated, Retired Police of New York, Fraternal Order of Police and the American Legion in West Virginia. He was also an avid Copiague High School sports fan.
Mr. Goudie leaves behind his wife of 50 years, Agnes Cosgrove; his brother George of Palm Coast, Florida; eight nieces and nephews as well as other family members and friends. He was predeceased by his parents: George and Anna and his sisters Virginia Hassert and Cecelia Steenson.
Mr. Goudie reposed at the Hoffman-Roth Funeral Home in Carlisle, Pennsylvania on January 18, 2006. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on January 19, 2006 at the St. Patrick Catholic Church in Carlisle with the Rev. Andre J. Meluskey as celebrant.
A second Mass of Christian Burial was held January 24, 2006 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 210 South Wellwood Ave., Lindenhurst with a viewing January 22 and 23, 2006 at Johnstons Wellwood Funeral Home, 305 N. Wellwood Ave., Lindenhurst. Burial in Breslau Cemetery, Lindenhurst with military and police honors.
