First Precint Officers honored

First Precinct Officers Christopher Melough, #5283 and John McMahon, #5281, were named Cops of the Month for May, 2005

The officers were given this honor for their action on November 15, 2004. They were working in the Wyandanch area and were advised of a robbery that occurred in the Second Precinct area. A description of the subjects and their vehicle was broadcast and likely escape routes were released. After an exhaustive search of their area, the officers observed a vehicle fitting the description they received at a gasoline station in the Amityville area. The suspect vehicle fled into a dirt lot when they observed the officers and three subjects fled on foot. The officers called for assistance and gave chase. Other unites established a perimeter and a K-9 unit was engaged.

When all of this proved unproductive, the officers decided to search a thickly overgrown drainage culvert near the suspect’s vehicle. After an arduous search, they discovered a suspect partially submerged in the muddy water at the bottom of the culvert. The subject admitted his part in the robbery. He was taken to the First Precinct where he was arrested. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a handgun used in the robber and further investigation resulted in the arrest of the two other subject.

•Police Officer Christian Hubert was the recipient of the Department’s Bravery Silver Medal in connection with an incident that occurred January 29, 2004. Police gave this account: At approximately 5:12 a.m., Hubert responded to a possible explosion at a Lindenhurst residence. Upon his arrival, he observed the house on fire and witnesses advised him that a woman was still inside the home. A volunteer fireman was passing the location and stopped to assist Hubert. Both entered the home and attempted to locate the subject. Unable to see due to the heavy smoke conditions, they called out to the woman. They followed her cries for help but were forced to exit for air. Fearing the woman would perish, both reentered the home and crawled through the smoke to the kitchen where they located the victim. Hubert broke a glass door in the rear of the home with his flashlight and carried the woman safely from the home.
