Constitution provides equal for rights for everyone

2005-10-06 / Opinion

Dear Editor:

In the September 29 edition, a Mr. M. Wiplich of Babylon wrote an impassioned letter in rebuttal to an article written in a previous edition. Mr. Wiplich took issue with the article in question which took the point of view that the Boy Scouts of America should not be denied the support of government resources because of their positions on homosexuality and religion. Mr. Wiplich quoted from the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence to add gravitas to his point.

Obviously Mr. Wiplich holds a strong belief in protecting the rights of all people as outlined by our founding documents. Which makes the last paragraph of his letter somewhat puzzling. For in the last paragraph he takes the Beacon to task for publishing the article, thus lending credibility to what he defines as "the discrimination it advocates." So Mr. Wiplich, in his defense of our constitutional rights, would want the Beacon to censor the free speech of people whose views he disagrees with.

Perhaps Mr. Wiplich should familiarize himself with the First Amendment of the Constitution.
