Learn about LIPA Wind Park plan at October 11 meeting
The Long Island Power Authority and Florida Power and Light, which is in contract to construct an offshore Wind Park in our area, is holding an informational meeting Tuesday, October 11, from 7 to 9 p.m. At that time, officials are expected to give an in depth presentation to the public about the plan, its design, extent, impact and operations. This is a wonderful opportunity for people who have expressed concern, support and interest over the plan to get the facts. The meeting will be held at Amityville Memorial High School, 250 Merrick Rd., Amityville, just east of Route 110.
It is easy to summarily dismiss or, for that matter, approve a proposal based on a subjective and initial reaction, fear, or personal preferences. It is much more difficult to take the time to study and understand something and then to make an informed decision about it.
Let’s try to do that with this plan. It is designed, said LIPA officials, to bring more power to Long Island where demand is on the rise and to broaden LIPA’s portfolio of energy sources. It will also reduce our reliance upon foreign oil.
Whether the Wind Park proposal is the way to accomplish that remains to be seen. But we will never know unless we take the time to consider and ask questions.
