Longtime Babylon resident, Alvera "Boobsey" Capie, was active in her community, its schools and loved its local beaches. Her unusual, and innocent, nickname was given to her by her brother, who could not pronounce her name as a child.

Alerva Legerlotz Capie died August 10, 2005 at her daughter’s home after a brief illness. She was 76 years old. She lived on Stowe Avenue in Babylon for 74 years.

Mrs. Capie, born in Floral Park, moved to Babylon in the 1920s and graduated from Babylon High School. Her children said they fondly remember spending summer days and taking winter walks at Fire Island and Cedar Beaches.

"She was the center of her family," said her daughter Sue. "She was completely devoted to her children, grandchildren and her whole family. Her compassion and lust for life will be missed by all."

In her spare time, she loved to travel. Her favorite trip was to her father’s birthplace Ihleburg, Germany. Her family said she had traveled to nearly every state in the USA.

Mrs. Capie is survived by her children: Susan Monda and her husband Ken of Babylon, Nancy Lia and her husband Greg of Williamsburg, VA, Robert and his wife Jeanne of Babylon, James G. and his wife Jessica of Babylon and Claudia Fiszell of Port Jefferson; her grandchildren: Kaitlin, Rachel, Christopher, Melissa, Julie, James, Claudia, Victoria and James. She is predeceased by her husband of 39 years, Dr. Robert Mansfield Capie and her son Frank.

Mrs. Capie reposed at the Boyd-Spencer Funeral Home of Babylon. Internment was at the North Babylon Cemetery on August 13, 2005.
