Heard It On The Grapevine
By Frick and Frack
THEY CALL IT THE "AFTER GUARD" PARTY. Each year the Baylon Yacht Club throws an August party for the old guard of the club—former members and those who have supported the club for years and years and their children and grandchildren. It’s always a gala affair and this year was no exception. The beautiful weather attracted a large crowd and every one had a fine time catching up on the news of friends and acquaintances of many years. Out-of-towners came to meet and greet. Saw Jane and Stephen Orr of Loudonville, Rita and Eve Seidenberg of Stuart, Fla., "Trinkie" and Tom Brueckner of Rhode Island.
We were all so glad to see Gus Fischel out and about after his fall several months ago—he looks great!
Talked to our Mayor, Ralph Scordino—guess what we talked about. The "turf wars" of course. His phone has been ringing off the hook with "no" calls.
Saw Mary Gallagher, Sue Borg, Pauline Kane, Eileen and Charlie Hoyler and so many more. The food was fabulous, especially if you like shrimp, mussels, cheese puffs, etc. Once again the party was THE party at the B.Y.C. Thanks to Joan and Bust St. John and their very hard working committee for a lovely afternoon.
A NEW HOME FOR BABYLON VILLAGE YOUTH PROJECT, and it’s right behind their present one on Park Avenue. Yes, the kids who enjoy the many activities of the Babylon Village Youth Project have to vacate their present location. But the good news is they have found an ideal spot next door to Dr. Chris Proto’s office on North Carll Avenue, and he’ll be their landlord. Talked to Aaron Stein, President of the Project who’s thrilled about finding a place. They have about 40 drop-ins a day, a movie night, supervised homework assistance, work with computers and are very active in the anti-smoking program of the Suffolk County Youth Partnership for Health under the guidance of their director Eric Price. "We’re all so grateful to be moving into our new home," said Aaron Stein. "We want to thank Terry Santmann who has so generously provided us with our Park Avenue headquarters for the past 14 years." The move is expected to take place on or about September 1.

Also attending was Artie’s twin sister Heather from Honolulu, Hawaii who recently received a bachelor of arts degree in psychology form Chaminade University in Honolulu. Artie received a Bachelor of Science degree in cinema and photography. Proud parents are Ann DeMott and Arthur Johann, formerly of Babylon Village.
HAVE YOU SEEN the L.L. Bean Fall Women’s catalog? Check out pages 6 and 7, which features advertisements of T-shirts with a picture of a girl holding a canoe on their front. That girl depicted on the shirts is none other than our own Joy Torrey who worked in the Public Relations Department of Grumman Aircraft back then in 1946 (it was Joy LeSauvage then). Her boss Jack Rettaliata was promoting the new canoe manufactured by Grumman after their war time contracts had ended and they were marketing the canoe on the basis that it was so light that anyone could lift it. Then, as now, Joy weighed less than 100 pounds.
TENNIS ANYONE? If the tennis courts at the Van Bourgondien County Park are any measure, tennis is not a very popular sport in our area. Took a ride over to the park to check out the fields. While there, we noticed the tennis courts and the weeds starting to invade. What’s up? Maybe the locals aren’t up-t-date on these courts. Anyway, they certainly were not getting a lot of play last week.
WE’RE HAPPY to let her many friends know that Mary Rinklin, who had surgery in Good Sam last week, is feeling much better and is coming along fine. In fact, by the time you read this we expect that she’s home and will be at the bridge table real soon.
We're big believers in the premise that you can't get too much of a good thing, but the publication of a previous published Heard it On the Grapevine column last week was an error.
