by Tiffany Elliott
Although he grew up in Missouri, Howard Allen Lowe was an avid Yankees fan. He learned to love the team when he served in the U.S. Army and had access to watching the games, according to his wife. Mr. Lowe, who lived in West Islip for 33 years, died November 29, 2004 of cancer of the esophagus after a valiant battle against the disease.
Mr. Lowe was born in Mulberry, Missouri and came to Bay Shore in 1944 with the Army, where he served as an Air Corps High Speed Radio Operator for three years. He served on the crash boats, which were used for air and sea rescue.
He was married to Melinda for 33 years, and the the couple raised their family in West Islip. An avid bowler, Mr. Lowe was the proprietor of the Pro Shop at Captree Lanes for 9 years. He also served as the Thursday Early Men’s Bowling League treasurer for more than 20 years.
During the early 1950s, Mr. Lowe founded the Bay Shore Little League, which he continued to be involved in for ten years. He also worked the past 13 years as a security officer in Bay Shore’s Admiralty (a gated community), a position he held until two weeks before his death.
"Dad always showed us that we could accomplish anything that we tried and if we didn’t get it the first time, we had to try again," said his daughter Cherilyn. "We have been left with a lifetime of wonderful memories. His hugs, kisses, long stories, special vacations, cigars and countless other memories will never be forgotten. Words cannot express how much he is truly missed," she said.
Mr. Lowe is survived by his wife Melinda, his children: Cherilyn Richard and her husband James of West Islip, Marilyn Briglio and husband Glenn of Massapequa, Carolyn Kahane and husband Glenn of Sayville and Allen Siegel and his wife Jennifer of North Babylon. He is also survived by his grandchildren, James, Jarrett, Amanda, Marissa, Natalia, Rachel and Samantha.
A celebration of life for Mr. Lowe was held at White-Voltz Funeral Home in Bay Shore on December 3, 2004. Cremation was private.
