•V.O.I.C.E.S. returns to the library, Sunday, October 10, 2 to 3:30 p.m. with their interpretation of Shadow of a Doubt. Register as space is limited.

•The Library will be having a defensive driving class given by BOCES Western Suffolk, Saturday, October 9, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. A check for $35 is due at registration.

•AARP/Alive Defensive Driving Course will be held Wednesday, October 27 and Friday, October 29, 9;30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. each day. There is a $10 non-refundable fee due at registration which is payable by check only. Babylon residents may sign up September 28 and 29 and all other residents may sign up thereafter.

•Free blood pressure checks are given the first Monday of each month from 10 a.m. to noon.

•A chess club for adults will meet Wednesdays October 13, 20 and 27, 2:30 to 4 p.m. The facilitator, Joe Lachat, has been teaching chess for over 30 years in the Bay Shore schools.

•On Thursday, October 14, 1 to 3 p.m. Barbara Krupit will discuss the book Hester Among the Ruins by Binnie Kirshenbaum.

•The Human Development Program at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County is offering a program entitled Helping Your Child Succeed in School, Thursday, October 14, 7 to 9 p.m. Call 727-7850 for more information or to register for this class.

•On October 14, 11 a.m. Dr. Harvey J. Gardner will discuss issues relating to hearing loss as well as the indicators of hearing loss, temporary vs. permanent problems and strategies for hearing better without getting hearing aids.

•The Library will conduct a fall crochet class, Tuesday, October 12, 7 to 8:45 p.m. Instructor Mary Czeisel will show participants how to crochet a stuffed pumpkin. Bring an H crochet hook and one skein of orange yarn. There is a material fee of $1 payable at registration.

•The Library will present the movie Cold Mountain, Thursday, October 14, 1:30 p.m. No registration is required.

•A college financial aid planning seminar will be offered Thursday, October 14, 7 p.m. This program is designed for parents of high school students. Alan Tanenblatt of Ron-Tan Enterprises Inc., will offer guidance and invaluable suggestions regarding financial aid program. Registration is underway.

•The library is sponsoring a bus trip to see Wicked and lunch at DaRosina, Sunday, March 13, 2005. The bus departs 11:30 a.m. Early registration is recommended since seats will be available for a limited time only. A non-refundable fee of $145 per person includes bus transportation, orchestra seat and lunch. Registration is underway.

•The Friends of the West Islip Public Library will accept donations of hardcover and paperback books, magazines and audio/visual materials in good, saleable condition for their next book fair in December. If you want to donate a box or more of these materials, please call the library before coming in.

•Friday afternoon at the movies will be held each Friday in October, 1 to 3 p.m. Call the Library for details on the movie.

•The Library will present Friday Afternoon at the Movies, October 8, 15, 22 and 29, 1 to 3 p.m. Call the library to find out which movie will be playing.

•Gino DiNapoli will perform "The Best of Italy", Tuesday, October 12, 2 p.m. Registration is suggested.

• A trip to Philadelphia for a ghost tour will be held Wednesday, October 20, departing 7:30 a.m. sharp and returning at approximately 7:30 p.m. This will be a one and one half hour walking tour of historic Philadelphia, lunch at the historic City Tavern and a tour of the now-retired Eastern State Penitentiary where Al Capone was once imprisoned. The cost is $69 per person and due upon registration.
