Next Sunday the Amityville Record, a sister newspaper for the Babylon Beacon and Massapequa Post, is celebrating its 100th year of publication with a dinner celebration at the Hunter Squires Jackson American Legion Post at 133 Dixon Ave., Amityville. The publishers, Alfred and Carolyn James invite the public to this free event.

"This is really a celebration of a community that has supported and enjoyed, been angry at times and proud at other times of its local newspaper, which has documented the history of Amityville and its surrounding areas for a century," said Al James. "We would hope that people come and enjoy the event."

The dinner celebration, which is from 1 to 5 p.m., is open to everyone. Dinner is catered by Amityville’s own Rose Cottage, restaurant and there will be music and entertainment for the kiddies. Magician John Lepre will be on hand to bring a smile to everyone’s face with his amazing tricks.

A brief ceremony is scheduled for 2 p.m. and there will be free giveaways to the first 100 people who show up for the celebration.

There is no charge to attend the event, and the dinner and entertainment are free. Anyone, however, who would like to help support our troops as they rebuild schools in Iraq and Afghanistan can bring down a notebook, pen, pencils, crayons or other school supplies. They will be given to the organization, Babylon for Babylon, a local chapter of the national organization, Operation Iraqi Children and your support would be appreciated.

"Newspapers are an important part of a community, helping to solidify its character, establish its identity and empowering its people," said Carolyn James. "We hope that many of those who have been touched by the work done by the Amityville Record staff over the years will be there to help us commemorate this milestone."

Anyone who would like further information or has questions, can call Al James at 631-264-0077 or Carolyn James at either 631-587-5612 or 516-798-5100. You can also reach them by e-mail at: acjnews@rcn.com
