Jon Pearce Baker, a 15-year resident of Lindenhurst, died July 27, 2003 at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip. He was 43 years old. With him at his bedside was his wife, Amy Springer Baker; his son, Jason Andrew Baker; his parents, Pearce and Kay Baker of Boyton Beach, Florida and formerly residents of Ocean Avenue, Amityville; his brother Alan Baker and his sisters Caryl Vissichelli and Cynthia Kohl

Mr. Baker was born September 3, 1959 in New Haven, Connecticut to Pearce H. and Katherine Ulry Baker, Jr. He attended Amityville High School and graduated in 1977. After graduation he entered the plumbing field and became a licensed master plumber employed by C F La Fountaine of Fire Island Pines. A boating enthusiast, he enjoyed sailing both here on Long Island and in Key West, Florida and he also raced all over the island. He was entranced with boats and bay from his earliest years as a junior member of Narrasketuck Yacht Club. This past winter, even though health had slowed him, he competed in the SORC Regatta at Key West, one of his favorites. Weekends locally he was often aboard a J-27, trimming sails and giving tactical advice. Midweek evenings he participated in South Bay Cruising Club races. Wintertime found him acting as race committee for the JY dinghy fleet sailing out of Snapper Inn on the Connetquot River, Oakdale.

Mr. Baker was involved with Scouting throughout his life, as a Cub Scout in Amityville, through the many levels of Boy Scouts, ultimately serving as Scoutmaster of Troop 538 in Lindenhurst.

In 1980 he married Amy, the daughter of Wally and Gloria Spring of Mole Place, Amityville and now Palm Bay Florida. Their son, Jason, age 20, is a junior at SUNY Maritime in the Bronx.

Survivors include his wife, of 23 years, Amy J. Baker of Lindenhurst; his son, Jason A Baker of Lindenhurst; his parents Pearce A. and Katherine (Kay) U. Baker of Boynton Beach, Florida; his brother Alan W. Baker of Manlius, New York; his sister Caryl B. Vissichelli of Shirley; his sister, Cynthia L. Kohl of Campbell Hall, New York and his grandmother Florence M. Ulry of Boynton Beach.

A memorial service was officiated by Reverend Randolph Jon Geminder of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, at the Powell Funeral Home, 67 Broadway, Amityville on July 31, 2003. Cremation was private. Due to his love of the bay Mr. Baker insisted that his ashes be deposited out there between the buoys he had rounded so often. Contributions to Jason Andrew Baker c/o The Law Office of Feuer & Feuer, 124 Medford Ave., Patchogue, NY 11772 may be made in lieu of flowers. Arrangements were under the direction of the Powell Funeral Home.
