Town should negotiate with Suffolk County

to pull B&B out of Oak Beach Park plan

Dear Editor:

Please forward to all Suffolk County residents because your tax dollars are paying for this acquisition.

I just returned from the last meeting on Oak BeachPark and I am so angry I can hardly think. Supervisor Schaeffer’s legacy in Oak Beach seems to be overdevelopment. First, he made the horrendous deal to put three story condos out there. Now we find out for the first time that his deal with Suffolk County to buy the former OBI site as parkland requires a small hotel, that is being called a bed and breakfast.

The town’s consultants tried to slide this past the

citizens at the meeting, but they found out democracy is a powerful thing. Many questions were asked. And were left unanswered. If we can renegotiate with the county not to have public bathing, why can’t we renegotiate to have no bed and breakfast? If you keep telling us we need an income stream for the bed & breakfast to maintain the park, how much is it? What would the maintenance cost be as a park in its natural state without all the overdevelopment? Why have we only sought proposals for business ventures, and not for educational ventures as was strongly requested by the public at the prior meeting? Why weren’t we told

going into the process that the town had already decided to have a small hotel, and the public would

only get to make the fringe decisions?
