Thomas Hanaway, veteran and longtime Babylon Village resident
Thomas E. Hanaway, a veteran of World War II and a longtime resident of Babylon Village, died Thursday, September 26,2002. He was in his 90th year.
Born in Medea, Pennsylvania and raised in Wilmington, Delaware, Mr. Hanaway served with the U.S. Navy at a Lieutenant during the war in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters.
Following his graduation from high school, Mr. Hanaway took a year off to earn money to attend college. He attended the University of Delaware and earned a bachelor’s degree. He also attended Northwestern University where he studied navigation for the U.S. Navy.
His professional career included working for Dupont and later for Fairchild Republic, as a contract administrator with the Stratos Division, which manufactured aircraft parts. He also spent several years working with the Suffolk County Department of Social Services as a caseworker. He retired in 1976.
A member of the Babylon Yacht Club, he was an enthusiastic sailor, said his wife, the former Nan Walbridge.
In his spare time he enjoyed gardening, growing flowers and vegetables and for a long time maintained a green house at his home in Babylon.
Mr. Hanaway met his wife, a U.S. Wave, while both served during the War. They were married shortly thereafter and made their home in Babylon when Mr. Hanaway was discharged from the Navy.
In addition to his wife of 58 years, Mr. Hanaway is survived by his children, Thomas W. of Boynton Beach, Florida; Katherine H. Sanson and her husband Paul of West Hartford, Connecticut, and Ann (Candy) Maier and her husband John of Asheville, North Carolina. His grandchildren, Jaime Hanaway of New Orleans; Stacy Hanaway of Radnor, Pennsylvania; Nancy S. Collins and her husband Ronald A. of Paris, France; Christopher D. Sanson of Manhattan; John T. Maier of California and Elizabeth Maier of Chicago, also survive him. He was predeceased by a brother, Francis Hanaway.
Mr. Hanaway reposed at the Fredrick & Sons Chapey Funeral Homes, West Islip. A religious service was held at Christ Church, Babylon Tuesday, October 1, 11 a.m., Cremation services were private.
