Lush plantings, some benches, walkways and rocks inscribed with the names of those residents who were killed in the terrorist attacks September 11, 2001 make up the Memorial Garden at Argyle Park, which will be unveiled in a ceremony Wendesday September 11.
"This memorial will give everyone who chooses to visit the site an opportunity for a moment of serenty, reflection and affirmation," said Babylon Village Trustee Alice Vanderveldt, who headed a committee of volunteers who worked with the Village on the project.
The garden was designed by Maura Miles-Mason and includes, in addition to the memorial rocks, a rose garden and knot garden with plantings that were carefully chosen because they evoke the various human emotions. At the end will be a water wall for reflection. The inscribed stones will encircle the knot garden and the pathways will accommodate wheel chairs. The entire memorial is circled with an wrought iron fence and the gate will remain open until dusk every day.
The memorial was paid for through Village funds and to date, will include seven names: Paul Rizza, Jill Metzler, Thomas Gambino, Richard Muldowney Jr., Tara Debek, Paul Sarle and Joe Corbett.
The memorial service begins at 6:30 p.m.
