West Islip swimmers qualify for
Three West Islip High School swimmers and divers have qualified to participate in the New York State Swimming Championships at Erie Community College in Buffalo. Michael Clifford, Jack Luquer and Ricky Mosback say they feel honored.
Michael, who is putting together a very high degree of difficulty list for the state meet, would like to dive consistently and make the finals.
Jack has had an outstanding season breaking records and leading his team to victory. Earlier in the season, he broke his uncle Richard Lambert’s 1983 100-meter backstroke record. He then dropped another half second in the State Qualifying Meet at Suffolk Community College. His next goal is to break the 1979 record of 54.90, held by Kevin Nash of Buffalo.
Ricky will return to the state meet for the second time and hopes to finish in the top eight. He had an excellent State Qualifying Meet, receiving 10s on his inward 1 1/2.
Additionally, the boys’ team is to be congratulated for its performance in the League II Invitational, reports Coach Duane Green. Captains Jack Luquer and J.R. DiCioccio provided great leadership. Swimmers and divers who helped score points are Matt Arancio, Henry Beckman, Dave Carswell, Casey Connors, James Cote, Andrew Cuzzo, Jon Eggers, Mike Gruber, Alex Johnson, Philip Kane, Larry Kenngott, Chris Marullo, John Maybeck, Dave Mazza, Christian Mirchel, James Nolan, Chris Prieto, Mike Salatti, Bryan Schleimer, Brian Van Meurs, Wesley Winter and manager Meg Teufel and Stacey Engebrethson.
