Babylon breaks ground for elementary addition

Officials of Babylon Schools broke ground this month, formally signifying the beginning of construction in the district. Students in the Class of 2014 wore small hard hats in bright yellow as five stepped forward to hold shovels. These five-year-olds will be members of the first class to use the new wing for second graders when school opens in September 2003. Also breaking ground, pictured left to right, are Superintendent Dr. William Bernhard, Assistant Superintendent Dr. Ellen Best-Laimit, Business Administrator Peter Daly, Buildings and Grounds Supervisor Tony Ciervo and architect Jeffrey Resetco. The one-year capital project will add a library media center, gym and other building improvements in addition to the new wing of classrooms that will relieve overcrowding conditions. "This is an exciting day for the community," commented Dr. Bernhard. "It follows almost three years of planning and preparation." Work at the elementary school is one part of the $16.5 million referendum that was approved by community voters in October, 2000. Work is also planned at the Memorial Grade School and the Junior/Senior High School.
