Congressman and firefighters battle heat

Lindenhurst volunteer firefighters joined with Congressman Steve Israel (D-Huntington) and came to the aid of an elderly woman without air conditioning recently. Bessie Incadella, 93, of Lindenhurst, called Israel's office asking for help in beating the stifling heat.

"It was an oven here and I don't know how I would have made it," Incadella said. "I'm so happy the Congressman and the firemen could help."

Incadella's air conditioner was on her floor and she was unable to install it. She had taken the unit out of her window during the winter because it was too drafty.

Medicaid recently stopped her coverage and she had no one to come to her home and get the air conditioner running again. Now, with extremely high summer temperatures, her home was rapidly becoming too hot. Israel called the local fire department and met them at her house within the hour to help get the air conditioner working.

With the heat index threatening to reach the 100's, the elderly are especially vulnerable to health problems from the heat. According to the Associated Press two deaths have already been attributed to the high temperatures across the country

in Late June, both in St. Louis.
