The Long Island National Association of Letter Carriers, Branch 6000, along with the United States Postal Service, United Way of Long Island, Island Harvest, Long Island Cares, The Interfaith Nutrition Network and the Long Island Volunteer Center, is getting ready to kick off its 10th annual Letter Carrier’s Food Drive.

On Saturday, May 11, Long Islanders are encouraged to leave non-perishable food items next to their mailboxes for local distribution. Since 1995, the Long Island NALC has collected over nine million pounds of food to help Long Islanders in need.

Since the events of September 11, this year’s drive is taking on a new dimension. After the tragedy that has been endured by our neighbors, Long Island families are in need of help now more than ever. Considering the current economic conditions, the National Association of Letter Carriers and the Postal Service are committed to collecting more food this year than in the past.

"We are certainly looking forward to a successful drive this year," said Dominic Prestano, president, NALC Branch 6000, "We strongly believe that the dedication of our Letter Carriers will truly make a difference in the lives of our fellow Long Islanders."
