Fifth grader Amanda Porter in Jeanine Wallace’s class at Oquenock Elementary School in West Islip, is one of 75 students named a Long Island Young Scholar of Mathematics. Porter competed against approximately 1,000 of Long Island’s top students in grades five to 10. In addition to her academic record, Porter is an avid reader, a member of Girl Scout Troop 2228 and enjoys dancing. She is also enrolled in a seventh grade honors math class at the Beach Street Middle School, which she attends every morning before her class starts at Oquenock. Porter says she would like to be a veterinarian so she can combine her math and science studies.
