Israel secures funds to help bias crime victims on Long Island

Congressman Steve Israel (D-Huntington) announced his success in securing $500,000 for BiasHELP of Long Island. The money will help this not-for-profit organization’s efforts to support bias crime victims on the Island. BiasHELP’s services include the operation of a hate crime’s hotline (1-877-ENDBIAS), advocacy with local criminal justice agencies and ongoing support, information and referrals. Israel asked from this money in March.

"This money is going to help victims of crime on Long Island. That is money well spent," said Israel. "Any crime is deplorable and victims of hate crimes face special challenges in their recuperation; BiasHELP is in a unique position to help."

Israel worked with colleagues in the House and Senate to include $500,000 in the House-Senate conference report on Commerce, Justice and State Appropriations. The bill passed the House today and is expected to be passed by the Senate and signed by the President in the coming weeks.

"I’ve been working on a bipartisan basis to get this funding. I am pleased that my colleagues also saw the importance of this program on Long Island," said the Congressman.

"These funds are vital in providing prevention and protection to Long Islanders victimized by hate, especially in light of September 11th’s attack on America," said Dr. Gail Barouh, President/CEO of BiasHELP.
