Ref’s call was a bad one for Babylon Panthers Dear Editor:
I am at a loss as to how a referee’s call that rescinded a Babylon goal and changed the outcome of an intercounty football championship game, could happen. We all know that referees make bad calls, as the replay unquestionably proves, but why no conference between the refs. How can the linesman Peter Siegemann, who made the insult of a call, explain that he did not conference with back judge Pat Wrenn? Was his attention so ill-placed that Mr. Siegemann did not see Mr. Wrenn’s "safe" signal? Maybe his mind was drifting and only saw one part of Drew’s legal block and made a "mind guess" of what really happened.
We all want our teams to win, in an unadulterated way. When slight of hand, or more appropriately, slight of call, changes the outcome of a game, we all loose.
If nothing else, the people representing the referees and in specific, Peter Siegemann, owe the Babylon football team an apology. I would suggest, as well, Mr. Peter Siegemann’s ability, if not intent, be investigated. These refs are professionals; let them be held to professional scrutiny.
