	Rory Whelan, chief of staff to State Senator Owen H. Johnson (4th Senate District, Babylon), was awarded the Thomas Jefferson bust  in conjunction with being named ALEC Volunteer of the Year.  Whelan devoted a great deal of time and effort into making this year's annual meeting one of the most well-attended in the organization's history.  Senator Johnson, who is the past recipient of the ALEC's Lifetime Leadership Award, expressed his pride in having a member of his staff receive this prestigious honor. 	Governor George Pataki has declared the week of October 22 through 26 to be School Recognition Week.  This is the tenth year this event has been celebrated.  North Babylon is using this opportunity to recognize its school board members for their service to the children and parents of our community.  They devote countless hours of service to public education and continually strive for improvement, quality and progress, said administrators.
