The First Precinct has chosen Police Officers Scott Mannetta, Brian Karp, Matthew Goodman and John Focas as their Cops of the Month. Officer Mannetta has been with the department since 1992 and has received six Headquarters, one command and one Exceptional Police Service Award. Officer Karp has been with the department since 1995 and has received six Headquarters. Officer Goodman has been with the department since 1995 and has received three Headquarters and one Cop of the Month Award. Officer Focas has been with the department since 1991 and has received six Headquarters and one Command Award.

On May 29 at approximately 10:31 p.m., a car drove off Shore Road into Sumpwams Creek in Babylon Village. The operator of the vehicle managed to escape from the submerged vehicle. He informed Officer Mannetta that there was a female trapped within the vehicle. Officer Mannetta immediately notified Headquarters that he was entering the water to attempt to rescue the victim. Officer Mannetta attempted to locate the vehicle that was completely submerged below the surface. Officers Karp, Goodman and Focas arrived shortly after to assist in an effort to save the submerged victim. After searching for about 10 minutes, they were successful in locating the vehicle and subsequently broke one of the car windows. With absolutely no underwater visibility, the officers searched for and located the victim within the car and removed her safely to shore. The victim was then transported by Babylon Village Rescue to Good Samaritan Hospital.

For their dedication and lifesaving accomplishments in this incident, the First Precinct is honored to name these officers as their Cops of the Month for August 2001.
