National school breakfast program

Moving to a new school can be a traumatic experience. This is why the John F. Kennedy Intermediate School, in the Deer Park School District, developed the "Welcome Breakfast." New students were invited to attend a bagel breakfast hosted by the fifth-grade Ambassadors. "The focus is to make the transition smoother for the children," said Administrator Assistant, Luisa Garcia-Soler. "Given the size of the building, it can be difficult for the students to adjust to their new surroundings. It is also an effort to foster a sense of community, which is our vision here at JFK."

It’s a pleasure to welcome you all to the JFK family," Ms. Garcia-Soler said, warmly greeting the newcomers. She introduced the Ambassadors who were selected by their fourth-grade teachers and went through an extensive interview process to achieve the honor of becoming an Ambassador. Ms. Garcia-Soler explained that the Ambassadors could be called upon for assistance and that a directory is provided. "Feel free to speak with them about your concerns," she added. The students received Welcome Kits compliments of the Deer Park Teachers Association, PTA, and JFK administration. "They have been very supportive," said Ms. Garcia-Soler. "A lot of hard work went into this event." Teacher Advisors, Arlene Barlam and Rosalyn Orafino also helped in coordinating this event.

Ambassadors Adam Sprachman, Jennifer Monahan, James Metzler, and Lisa Burstein performed a beautiful piece entitled "Spectrum" for the students.

"The Welcome Breakfast is big," stated Ambassador Mark Stevens. Fellow Ambassador Tracy Calvacca agreed, "There are a lot of new students." James added, "It’s a good way for students to meet. It’s hard to meet new people when you’re new." Other Ambassadors included Anthony Troffa, Allyson Miller, Danielle Bergin, and Tonianne Conforti.

It is unanimous that the "Welcome Breakfast" is a good idea!
