Dean Jurs wore the Cross of TAU, a symbol of St. Francis that recognized the power of Jesus Christ in people’s lives. A member of the St. Joseph R.C. Church Prayer Center in Babylon, his mother said he lived his life with the hope and self sacrifice of a true Christian.

Dean Michael Jurs, a lifelong resident of Babylon and a graduate of Babylon High School, died suddenly, July 10, 2001. He was 26 years old.

"He was a loving, kind and giving person," said his mother Elaine.

Dean was an avid fisherman and hunter and spent many hours on the Bay with his close fishing and hunting partner, Jim Marron of Babylon Village.

"Dean was one of the most thoughtful, kind, funny young men I have ever met, said Marron who is 70 and pointed out that the age difference between the two men was overcome by their interest in fishing and hunting and their common love of the Bay. "We shared many happy hours on the Bay together and in today’s world people do not have the time for one another. Even though we were year’s apart in age, Dean had time for me and I love him and will always miss him."

"He will always live in my heart," said his father John.

Dean had a Labrador, Teal, who he raised from a pup and he’d often run the dog and loved him passionately, said Marron.

Chris Broman, a friend of Dean’s for more than two years described him as a caring person who liked to help others. "He was a great friend who lived for fishing," he said.

A printer by trade, Dean was looking to the future at the time of his death, signed up to go to Catherine Gibbs, where he had hoped to study computers.

In addition to his mother and father, Dean is survived by his brothers, John and his wife Bridget and Jimmy and his wife Linda. He is also survived by his nieces Megan, Melissa, Amanda, Lauren and Grace and by his nephew Corey.

He reposed at the Fredrick Chapey & Sons Funeral homes in West Islip. A funeral mass was said in St. Joseph’s R.C. Church July Saturday, July 14, 2001. Cremation followed and Dean’s ashes will be spread on McCormack Island on the Babylon cut, at sea and interred in North Babylon Cemetery.
