Brooklyn man charged in health club thefts
A Brooklyn man was arrested July 11, in connection with a series of credit card thefts from customers’ lockers at Bally’s Health Clubs in Copiague and Bay Shore. Police gave this account:
The subject, identified as John Rodriguez, 24 of 300 10 St., Brooklyn became a suspect in t he thefts after Suffolk County Detectives received a number of calls in response to a July 5 Crime Stopper’s advisory. He was one of several men caught on video surveillance tape breaking into customers personal lockers and stealing their credit cards. The suspects then used the cards to purchase CD players, cameras, DVD players and other electronic equipment from area stores. The value of the illegal purchases is estimated to be in the tens of thousands of dollars.
After confirming that Rodriguez was the suspect on the tape, his arrest was arranged with cooperation of the New York City Police Department’s 78th Precinct Anti-Crime officers. He was charged with two counts of forgery; two counts of criminal possession of stolen property and one count of grand larceny and petit larceny.
Detectives are continuing the investigation with efforts to identify other suspects involved in the thefts.
