Hats Off To Shirley Wuu & Matthew Castagna
Deer Park High School's Valedictorian and Salutatorian
Valedictorian of Deer Park High School, Shirley Wuu is as close to perfect as they come. Graduating with an unweighted average of 99.2, Wuu is an exceptionally intelligent student. Over the past four years, Wuu has been an active member of the school community as president of the National Honor Society and Tri-M National Music Honor Society, captain of the math team and the academic team, treasurer of the student council and editor of the yearbook. A talented musician, she is a New York All State violinist and has performed with the Long Island Youth Orchestra, as well as the high school’s orchestra and chamber orchestra. In the fall, Wuu will be attending Princeton University where she plans to major in economics. "Well-rounded, bright,l talented and sweet best describes Shirley Wuu," Deer Park High School Principal Owen Spanier said. "It has been an honor having her as a student in our high school."
Matthew Castagna’s diligent work in the classroom has earned him the prestigious honor of being Deer Park High School’s salutatorian. Graduating with an unweighted average of 97.8, Castagna demonstrated outstanding conduct and character throughout his high school career. He has been involved in many clubs and activities including the National Honor Society, leader’s club, prom committee and health and wellness club. An outstanding athlete, Castagna was captain of the varsity football and baseball teams. He was also granted the News 12 Scholar-Athlete Award. Castagna will attend Johns Hopkins University where he will major in pre-medicine and continue his football career. "I owe a great deal of my success to my parents who always made sure I was reaching my full potential," Castagna said. Deer Park High School Principal Owen Spanier said "He is such a great person to know; I will miss him."
