The three-year-old Public Affairs 101 course at West Islip High School has proven to be an unqualified success, both for the students involved and

the community at large, said school officials recently. The program, which is billed as an Introduction to the Analysis of Public Policy, is designed to provide high school seniors with the basics in research, communication and decision making. The curriculum also encourages the students involved in the program to read and analyze articles in such weighty newspapers as The New York Times on local, state and international public policy issues. The course includes defining and identifying the components of public policy; communicating ideas with respect to their findings; and collecting data through research and interviews. At the annual Suffolk County Math Tournament, held recently at Suffolk County Community College, Babylon High School sophomore Sarah Cotter scored the highest individual total for all tenth graders. The competition last year, in which the finest math students compete, saw Cotter declared the second place winner. As a member of the Babylon High School Math Team, she was determined to do better in this latest round. "I enjoy math," she said this week, adding that she will continue studying the subject in college. Cotter is the daughter of Karin and Steve Cotter. On February 2, there were many shadows to be seen as tenth graders at Deer Park High School participated in Teens on the Job, Long Island Groundhog Shadow Day. Teens on the Job, a program of the Long Island Mentoring Partnership, provides tenth grade students with experiential learning about a chosen career field and its workplace. Job shadowing enables students to shadow a workplace mentor as he or she proceeds through a routine day on the job, providing an up-close look at how the skills learned in school are put into action in the workplace.
