the musical "Working"

On Friday and Saturday, March 30 and 31, for two performances only, the North Babylon High School drama club will present the musical Working. Based on the well-known book by Studs Terkel, Working presents real interviews in songs and monologues from a cross-cultural sampling of American workers. People from all walks of life are represented, especially those whose occupations may be considered "menial" or "unimportant." Working celebrates the contributions of these hardworking men and women and asks us to respect these Americans for the people they are and not label them according to the job they do.

A cast of more than 30 talented North Babylon High School theatre students bring dozens of characters to life in solo and ensemble musical numbers written by pop icon James Taylor, Broadway veterans Stephen Schwartz and Mary Rogers, among others. Working should be a delight for the eyes and ears, as well as the heart.

Working is, at times, moving and touching as we experience the real life stories our unsung heroes relate about their hopes, dreams and aspirations. However, there is always the sense of humor, sometimes tinged with irony, that our characters exhibit, which shows us that they are willing to make the best of it all - as long as they can have something to point to, something they are proud of.

Celebrate what makes our American society great - the hardworking individuals who are there when we need them, doing all the jobs that need to get done.

Curtain time is 8 p.m. Tickets are available at the box office. The cost is $6 for general admission and $5 for seniors and students. Call 631-321-3283 for more information.
