•A six-hour Defensive Driving course given by Tom Gambino of Empire Safety Council will be held at the library Saturday, June 24, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Registration forms are available at the circulation desk.

•The movie Everything That Rises (not rated), starring Dennis Quaid, will be shown Wednesday, June 28, 1;30 p.m. Everyone welcome.

•The Internet User’s Group will meet Thursday, June 29, 7 to 9 p.m. Everyone welcome.

•Learn how to use the new online card catalogue, access the Internet and the Virtual Reference Collection in small Computing For Beginners classes during July and August. Classes are taught by members of the Reference staff. Please make appointments at the Reference Desk.

•The Dr. George Goodman Memorial Film/Lecture Series continues this summer with the film Man of No Importance (1994), Sunday, June 25, 7 p.m. Discussions as well as coffee and cake will follow. To attend, please sign-up at the Circulation Desk. Norman Heischober, a Bay Shore resident will lead the series.

•In-person registration is underway for the 2000 Summer Reading Club program, "Read to the Future." The program runs June 26 through August 11.

•On Thursday, June 29 and July 6 at 7:30 p.m., Cooperative Partners returns to give Mambo Lessons. Join the fun and learn the steps. Registration is underway.

Find out what courses are available to prepare for a career in the health field. Sign-up is underway for adults and high school students.

•A Rainbow Fish Preschool class takes place on Thursday, July 13 or Thursday, August 10, 11 to 11:45 p.m. Preschool children can have fun with colors as they make their own rainbow fish and parents can join in too. Registration for either class begins Tuesday, June 27.

•The Board of Trustees of the West Islip Public Library will meet at the library Tuesday, June 27, 1 p.m. West Islip School District taxpayers are welcome to attend the meeting.

•The Quilting Block-of-the-Month Club will meet Saturday, June 24, 10 a.m. to noon.

•The library will present Travel the World...Without Leaving West Islip, a video travel series beginning Monday, June 26, 7 to 9 p.m. and continuing on Mondays, July 10, 17, 24, and 31. The first in the series will be the beautiful islands of Hawaii. Enjoy the video presentation along with the local cuisine. If you have traveled to Hawaii or any of the other upcoming locales, come down and share your photos and mementos.

•Young adults in grades six through eight can join the Summer Reading Club Book Discussions beginning June 27 and continuing throughout the month of July. Young Adult librarian, Mrs. Brosnan will lead the discussions which will also be in preparation for the Suffolk County Public Libraries Summer Competition of the Battle of the Books. Participants need not compete in the Battle to be part of the discussion group. Book lists and additional information available at registration.
