Geraldine J. (Getter) D’Andrea, aka Gerry of Amityville, died at home in Palm Beach Shores, Florida assisted by hospice and surrounded by family on Jan. 18, 2012.

Mrs. D’Andrea was born in Bainbridge, New York on Oct. 25, 1921 to the late Maurice and Mildred (Spencer) Getter. The Spencer Family first arrived in the Americas via the ship Mary and John in 1633.

On Jan. 8 the St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church held its annual Epiphany celebration at the Argyle Boat Basin in Babylon Village, officiated by Reverend Father Nektarios Papazafiropoulos who blessed the waters. Four young members, three boys and one girl, from the congregation dove into the frigid water to retrieve the Holy Cross which was thrown into the water for the blessing.

The building, at 153 West Main Street in Babylon, is home to the Village Museum where an exhibit of posters depicting historical images of the Village was on display for this year’s centennial celebration.

Melfi received the citation in front of 150 ham radio operators at the Amateur Radio Convention at Briarcliffe College in Bethpage on Jan. 8.

A fire disaster struck a family at 104 Parkdale Dr., North Babylon. No one was injured except for a missing pet cat but the home and belongings are nearly a total loss. The Parkdale Civic Association has started a fund to help this family at this difficult time. All proceeds raised will go to the family. Donations in any amount will be appreciated.

Walter Baraclough donates blood at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center several times a year. More than 10 years ago, his wife was told she could no longer be a blood donor due to a medical issue. This motivated Baraclough even more to be a regular donor. Someone in this country needs a lifesaving transfusion every three seconds.
