Lindenhurst students send letters of well-wishes to soldiers in Iraq
In late September, students at William Rall Elementary School in the Lindenhurst School District took part in a letter-writing campaign for American soldiers serving in Iraq.
The idea was spawned by Lindenhurst parent Darren Cooley, a Gulf War veteran and the current senior vice commander of the Lindenhurst VFW. He notes, "As a Gulf War Veteran, I can empathize what it is like to not receive much mail. While material items are always greatly appreciated, nothing warms the heart like a letter of encouragement or a drawing from a child to let a soldier know that he or she is not forgotten."
Students in all classes at Rall took part in the campaign, including kindergarten students who drew pictures of the American flag for the service men and women. Hannah Vobis, a third-grade student in Stacey Bressi’s class, summed up her sentiments to a soldier by writing, "You make our country great. We will never forget you."
In the photo, third-grade students Denise Przedpelski, left, and Hannah Vobis, right, put the finishing touches on their letters to American soldiers.
