Town debt is up since 2003
Dear editor:

I just read your story detailing Babylon’s town indebtedness and feel that it’s necessary to direct your attention to what I feel are unfair inferences drawn by the numbers relied upon therein.

You detail the town having paid down the debt between 1999 and 2003. However, Mr. Bellone was not the Supervisor until January, 2002. As of December of that year the town debt was $152,491,147. According to filings with the town clerk’s office, that debt had increased to $179,346,697 as of December, 2004.

These numbers paint a much different, and may I add, accurate picture of the direction of the town’s indebtedness under Mr. Bellone’s leadership.

Jim McDonaugh,Lindenhurst

The writer is the Republican candidate for Babylon Town Supervisor
