Ella Connolly, Babylon resident B.V. Red Cross volunteer

by Tiffany Elliott

Ella May Connelly (nee Hafele), a longtime Red Cross volunteer, died April 25, 2005 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Islip. She was 88 years old and lived on Paumanake Avenue in Babylon Village.

She was born on February 10, 1917 to Philip and Ella Ische and raised in Brooklyn. For 12 years, she worked as a clerk for Equitable Life Assurance Company. She later married Vincent Connolly, who was home between assignments during World War II, and moved to Babylon Village in 1951.

For three decades, in addition to raising four children, she became involved with the Red Cross where she helped in the administration of blood drives.

After her husband suddenly died, the fraternal organizations in Babylon Village made sure her youngest daughter was able to attend college.

In her spare time, her family said she loved penning letters and was known for her optimism and friendly personality.

Mrs. Connolly leaves behind her four children: Mark; Laura Pfaffe and her husband Albert; Judy Catellucio and her husband Joseph; Virginia Brown and her husband Tim; her longtime companion, Francis Schaff. She also leaves behind six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Her husband Vincent and her great-grandchild, Tobin Renner, predeceased her.

She reposed at Frederick J. Chapey & Sons West Islip Funeral Home. A private cremation was held on April 29, 2005.
