Heard It On The Grapevine
By Frick and Frack

GUESTS ARE RAVING about the food, the music and most of all the setting a tthe Hospice Care Network benefit party held on the grounds of the beautiful waterfront Babylon Village home of Terry Santmann. Bayshore attorney Steven Siben was the honoree. There was even a boat ride for party goers after they dined on the gourmet specialities, including a special tent set up for seafood by the Irish Coffee Pub. Some four hundred people were on hand of the gala party which raised a whopping $70,000 for Hospice Care. congrats go to Terry and to the co-chairs Charlene Gibbs and Ellen Brennan and to everyone who worked so hard on the very special event.

CALLING ISLIP TOWN. Sequams Colony residents need help and they need it now. The roads are in terrible condition; on street parking is a problem and come of the streets are flooded after even a light rainfall. After a heavy rain residents have to wear hip boots to reach their homes because of the very inadequate drainage. Residents pay top taxes and need better service.

WAIT ‘TIL NEXT SUMMER. Sally and Ted Shiebler are back in their California home after spending the summer here at their Captree Island summer house. Have a great winter Sally and Ted,l and we’ll see you next year.

AH REVENGE - HOW SWEET IT IS. Last year the gals defeated the guys at the first annual Golf Tournament on the E. Donald Conroy golf course. But the men came back at this year’s Battle of the Sexes on October 5 and won by a score of 719 to 768. It was a gorgeous fall day, perfect for golf, and a great way to cap a successful season. The winners, after handicaps were: Hal Malmquest was a low gross for the men and Maria Egan and Mary Lou Assama tied for low gross for the women. Hal Malmquest and Harold Freeze were the men’s low team, Lisa Albert and Mary Lou Asson were the women’s low team and Hal Malmquest and Kathy Trotta were closest to the pin. We hear that our Mayor Ralph Scordino and Trustee Kevin Muldowny were on hand for the big day. Everyone says special thanks to the staff and crew of the little jewel of a golf course in our Village.

SHE’S DOING JUST FINE. Visited with former Babylonian Merritt Thurlow in Tacoma Park in Washington D.C. where she lives with her daughter Betsey Shields. Merritt was born and raised here in Babylon and lived here with her late husband Bill and their family for many years. She says "hi" to all her Babylon friends.

IT WAS A FAMILY REUNION TIME FOR THE YOUNG FAMILY LAST WEEKEND. They came from near and far to get together. Jody flew in from Colorado; Megan Zwerner came from Massachusetts; Peter and his family also came from Massachusetts;and Stephen and his family from Connecticut. Close friends Christopher de Murias and his family were here from their Massachusetts home and John Walbridge flew up from Florida.

HAVE YOU SEEN THE 911 MEMORIAL YET? It is so beautiful - a very fitting tribute to the town residents who lost their lives in the disaster. If you have trouble walking, or are disabled in any way, the best bet to visit the memorial is to go to Overlook Beach and walk through the temporary barricade, according to a Babylon Town spokesman. The walk at Cedar Beach is much longer. The town is going to construct a permanent handicapped parking area coming up in the future. Hats off again to all who were involved in this beautiful project.

LOTS OF WORK GOING ON inside at the old Town hall in Babylon Village. The beautiful upstairs room (the former court room) has a freshly painted ceiling and lots of other renovations. Next up, according to Old Town Hall Committee Chairman Councilman Wayne Horsley will be a celebration for the public when the building is placed on the National Registry of Historic Places. We’ll keep you posted on this one.

AND SPEAKING OF OLD TOWN HALL Mary

Howell has donated the desk and cabinet of her late husband Rogers Howell who was always such a vital force in our Village, and they are now in place in the meeting room on the first floor of the building - a very welcome addition.

IT’S TWIN GIRLS for Lt. Colonel James Brennan and his wife, Laura Spencer Brennan. The little girls were born in Honolulu on August 18 and weighed just over two pounds. Caroline and Charlotte were two months premature, and the good news is - both are doing very well. Their very proud grandparents are Adele and Charles Spencer of West Islip and Linda and James Brennan of North Carolina. Colonel Brennan has recently completed tour of duty in Iraq and is now stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii.

DON’T FORGET the Apples and Art Festival at the Conklin House this weekend, starting on Friday evening, with events planned for Saturday and Sunday too. See you there.
