West Islip Leo Club lives up to its mission The members of the Beach Street Middle School Leo Club in the West Islip School District never forget what the acronym, Leo, stands for: Leadership, Experience, Opportunity. Working hard as a junior service club, these young citizens find ways to contribute to local communities and enhance day-to-day life for residents who are dealing with difficult times. This year, the youngsters donated food, office supplies and other "wish list items" to the Christa House in West Babylon, a not-for-profit residence for the dying poor. At the Berkshire Nursing Home, also in West Babylon, the club spent a Sunday afternoon playing Bingo with residents. Working with its sponsor, the Babylon Lions Club, the children held a winter drive, collecting eyeglasses, sunglasses and cases, some of which are sent outside the United States for those who cannot afford this "luxury." At the Lion’s Club pancake breakfast,k the children bussed and served breakfast. This month, they will be seen passing out American flags and smiles along the parade route on memorial Day. Says Leo Club Advisor Laurene Wenz, "It’s always nice to share this day with the community." Co-Advisor Geralyn Wilkens confirms that students made two monetary donations, one for the hospitals helping several classmates deal with health challenges,k and to Lionheart, which was founded by Mikki McCullough shortly after the 9-11 tragedy. The Beach Street Leo Club is expanding awareness while respecting the needs and resources of communities.
