On the afternoon of May 6, students at Lindenhurst Middle School dangled high above the gym floor on bungee ropes and ladders, as their friends, parents and district administration looked on. The students were demonstrating the use of equipment installed at the school, thanks to a $10,000 grant secured by Senator Charles Fuschillo, Jr. The money allowed the Middle School to implement Project Adventure, a physical education curriculum aimed at teaching children the importance of team work.
Among the equipment installed at the Middle School was a rock climbing wall, a fire cracker ladder, and the "dangle-duo" ladder. Each activity requires a team of students to work together to succeed on the apparatus. Cheryl Clifton, Coordinator of Health, Physical Education and Athletics, states, "Project Adventure takes the competition out of the students; it teaches them how to work as a team to accomplish something."
District administration presented Senator Fuschillo with a plaque at the demonstration, in appreciation for his work in securing the grant.
Andrea Curran, physical education teacher at the Middle School, says, "This unit is a welcome addition to our curriculum here at the Middle School. When you take a class through various games, stunts, trust activities and initiative problems, you begin to feel the class becoming a community. It seems magical...and we are very happy that the magic is right here in our gymnasium!"
