Local resident receives Antarctic Service Medal

Air Force Reserve Tech. Sgt. Joseph R. Zuccaro has received the Antarctic Service Medal, which is awarded to members of the U.S. armed forces and civilian citizens such as scientists and polar experts.

The medal is awarded to individuals who have participated in scientific, direct support, or exploratory operations or expeditions on the continent of Antarctica under sponsorship and approval of the U.S. government.

Flight crews of aircraft providing logistics support from outside the Antarctic area after completing 15 flying missions and individuals of permanent Antarctic stations, or serving in contiguous waters or an outlaying station on the continent also are qualified to receive the medal.

The sergeant, an aerial photographer with 14 years of military service, is assigned to the 4th Combat Camera Squadron, March Air Reserve Base, Riverside, Calif.

Zuccaro graduated in 1977 from North Babylon High School, and received an associate degree in 1995 from Victor Valley College, Victorville, California.
