Babylon math students excel at competition
In the final round of the 2005 Al Kalfus/Long Island Math Fair, Babylon mathematicians distinguished themselves again. This small-sized school district is not limited in its stature, and has consistently proven itself as a top district on the Island by the number of math medal winners it produces each year. Recently, students presented research papers and projects a the April 8 competition at Hofstra University, earning Babylon a record 15 medals, more than other districts in the competition, including Syosset, Jericho, Great Neck, Garden City, Smithtown and Sachem. Acknowledged for outstanding ability during this prestigious event were seventh grader Ryan Young who brought home a gold medal and seventh graders Jonathan Buonaspina, Kathryn Pisciotta, Matthew Scott, Adam Simone and Elyse Wexler and eight graders Erin Khan and Jessica Weber with silver medals. Seventh graders Mackenzie Grant and Johanna Hartmann; eighth graders Philicia Frasson, Elizabeth Jedrlinic, Brendan and Griffin O’Shea and ninth grader Ashley Maharana each were honored with Bronze Medals. Math Director Dan Drance says this achievement is due to "hard work by the students and careful mentoring by sponsoring teachers:" Richard O’Malley, Jeanne Weingarten, Cathy Zelli and Michael Collins.
