News from Babylon School District •Sixteen scholarships worth $1,200 each and one for $1,500 in honor of a Babylon Community Scholarship Committee founder, have been awarded to members of the Class of 2005. According to Principal Robert Visbal and School Counseling Center Director Barbara Restivo, the students are Valedictorian Jawad Ahmed, Salutatorian Joanna Witkin, Jonathan Baum, Taylor Berry, Benjamin Cotter, Kristine David Allison Funk, Samantha Heavner, Ryan Holgan, Katherine Jedrlinic, Venetia Kamath, Patrick Koch, Kaitlin O’Connor, Shannon Rigney, Carolyn Rodgers, Matthew Speacht and Brandon Hodges who is received the Betty Van Bourgendien Memorial Award. The Community scholarship Committee is comprised of village residents. •Christine Goodbody is the 2005 Bausch and Lomb Science Award winner. Described by Principal Robert Visbal as "our most outstanding science student," she is now eligible for $20,000 in scholarship money from the University of Rochester. •Teacher Sheila Vaswani’s social studies students recently participated in video conferences with members of the Philadelphia Museum of Arts. A variety of topics in global and American history were discussed. Vaswani’s lesson on the Roman Banquet has been accepted by the New York State Academy of Teaching and Learning and will be examined by a juried block in Albany for inclusion on its new website. •Art student Nick Greenwald participated in the New York State Olympics of the Visual Arts in Saratoga Springs recently in the category of Drawing. The theme was Metamorphosis and while most other schools sent teams, Greenwald competed as an individual. He was awarded Honorable Mention in Most Creative Drawing. According to art teacher Celeste Topazio, Greenwald prepared sketches, researched and finished his art piece illustrating the theme, and completed a short term drawing assignment. "The level of this competition was high," she reports.
