West Babylon Schools receive
funding toward project prepare

West Babylon High School was recently awarded a $1,198 grant to be used toward its proposal, Project PREPARE, for the 2005-06 school year. Project PREPARE stands for Pupils Receiving English Language Arts Strategies and Engaging in Best Practices for Improved Achievement on the English 11 Regents to Exit High School with a Local Diploma. The grant, provided by Citigroup and the Mentoring Partnership of Long Island, is called the Citigroup Success Fund.

Project PREPARE is an extended tutorial program designed to provide focused, small group support in the areas of literacy development and self-motivation for at-risk 11th - 12th grade limited English proficient, special education, and general education students. A qualified team of English, special education, and ESL teachers, plus a guidance chairperson and counselors, work with students to achieve academic and social competencies that will lead to graduating with a local diploma, as opposed to dropping out due to failure to meet the rigors of the high stakes English 11 Regents assessment.

The grant money will be spent on various items to establish a "Listening Center" in the tutorial rooms, as well as classroom supplies and staff development.
