Legislator Carpenter honors
volunteer of the year

Legislator Angie Carpenter (R-WI) honored Tyler Capitano as the 2005 Suffolk County Outstanding Volunteer for the 11th Legislative District. Capitano, who is a student at Paul J. Bellew Elementary School in West Islip, was diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis at age five. With help from his family and friends, Capitano organized a walk-a-thon at his school. Teachers and students were sponsored for the one-mile trek around the school grounds. His fundraiser earned more than $52,000 to support arthritis research, community programs and service initiatives. In recognition of his work, he was named "Hero of the Year" by the National Arthritis Foundation for two consecutive years.

"Tyler Capitano is a special young man with a bright future ahead of him. His focus on helping others and being an active member of our community is evident by the goals that he has set for himself and has so successfully accomplished thus far," said Carpenter. "Tyler is among the many unsung heroes throughout our County," added Carpenter.
