N. Babylon resident honored as Woman of Distinction

State Senator Owen H. Johnson (4th Senate District, Babylon), Chairman of the Finance Committee, honored Alice T. Cone of North Babylon as  New York State Woman of Distinction at a special ceremony held in Albany on June 14. Cone is a 40-year resident of Suffolk County who has enriched countless lives through her humanitarian efforts. She has been involved with the Suffolk County Human Rights Commission, the Belmont Lake Civic Association, Catholics of African Ancestry, Resurrection House and Central Long Island NAACP. She retired from the State University of New York at Old Westbury after 25 years of service and went on to serve as director of human resources and staff development at Long Island Head Start. Cone has a master’s degree in special education from Long Island University C.W.Post.

An advocate for the rights of parents and students of the North Babylon School District, Cone has been recognized by numerous organizations for her dedication. She’s received the North Babylon Citizen Education Award; the Distinguished Citizen Award; the Harriet Tubman Humanitarian Award, among others.

"Alice Cone’s work has benefited so many people in the community," said Senator Johnson. "It is my pleasure to honor her as a Woman of Distinction."

The awards ceremony was held in Albany on Tuesday, June 14 and featured an exhibit that included biographies and photographs of 62 women from throughout the State who serve as role models for young women and an inspiration to all of us. Other honorees from the 4th Senate District this year included Suffolk County Legislator Angie Carpenter and Sara Jean Hammel of West Islip.

The Senate’s Women of Distinction program was created in 1998 to recognize outstanding women in our midst - women living and working in New York State whose contributions have greatly enriched the quality of life in their communities and beyond.
