Restaurant did not live up to positive review After reading the glowing revue of Mario’s, 17 Vanderbilt Pkwy., Commack in The Best of Dining Out column this week, I decided to try. I cannot tell you how disappointed I was. My wife, a friend and I went and sat in the dining room. My friend and I ordered the Linguine de Mar and my wife ordered a veal dish. The Linguine de Mar was described on the menu as having shrimp, clams and mussels over a bed of linguine. It could be served with garlic and oil or Fra Diablo. We chose the latter. As I was placing the order, I asked the waitress if a salad came with the dish and she stated it did. The salad was served and we found it to be very good. The first indication of what was to come was when the chef came out asking us how we wanted the shrimp prepared. We reiterated the Fra Diablo. Then the main courses came. The first thing we noticed was that there were clams, there were mussels but there were no shrimp in the bowl. When I asked the waitress she went back to the kitchen and after talking with the chef she came back. She asked if it would be okay if they cooked the shrimp and brought it out to us. We agreed. After about 10 minutes she brought out seven shrimp. I wondered how she expected us to divide them evenly between the two of us. I gave my friend four and I took three shrimp. We finished our meal and asked for the check. The waitress furnished the check and I happened to glance at it and noticed that we were being charged for the salads that were to accompany the order at no additional charge. I called it to her attention and she went and removed it from the check. The food was tasty and the portions were large but I left there with the feeling that they were trying to cheat me. I would think that a restaurant would be extra careful when they get a good revue in a local food column. William J. Gould Deer Park
