A few thoughts

from around town...

•There was a contingency of Amityville Village residents at the newly renovated Town Beach at Venetian Shores in Lindenhurst. The group, which included Peter Casserly, the McVeety’s, the Kretz’s, and the Dougherty family were having a wonderful time enjoying the food and music under a balmy summer night sky.

For anyone who has not stopped down to the beach to see the changes there, we say do it before the summer ends. It offers a spectacular view of the bay, a gorgeous pavilion and a wonderful restaurant. It answers the question of "what is the town doing with my tax dollar," with a shout. And the only bit of controversy we heard about the new facility was "why did it take so long."

•The debris has piled up again along Railroad Avenue between Grand Avenue an East John Street in Lindenhurst. The only clean portion of that roadway is the area in front of the auto scrap yard. Surely the Town of Babylon and the Village of Lindenhurst, which share jurisdiction of that road, can get together and come up with a system of monitoring the road and cleaning it up on a regular basis. It’s a blight and oftentimes a hazard as bags of garbage, mattresses and other large items often wind up in the middle of the roadway. Let’s get it done, please.

•The recently refurbished Lindenhurst Middle School looks outstanding. Have you seen it? It made our heads turn as we passed down Wellwood Avenue last week. Finally the building has character, and is designed appropriately for its era. What a treat!

•And speaking of facilities, we almost hate to have to say it, but Amityville’s school administration offices and the high school need refurbishment—big time. We understand the financial difficulties and the problems associated with the Park Avenue project, which jaded many taxpayers, but it’s vital that the school board put together a comprehensive capital improvement plan to address these issues and others. And, it’s time the public recognizes that being penny wise and pound foolish is no way to maintain million dollar investments.
