Patricia Wilkens, 70, West Islip resident Patricia Wilkens, a 50-year West Islip resident, spent most of her life helping others as a volunteer and indulged her creative side by running a shop called "The Browsery" in Babylon. Patricia Ann Wilkens (nee Cavanaugh) died Thursday, June 14, 2005 following complications of surgery. She was 70 years old. Born in New York City, she graduated from Hempstead High School and raised her family. Early in life, she dabbled in fashion design and sketching and later cultivated her crafting hobby as a businesswoman in her store. She was deeply involved in Boy Scouting, starting with serving as a den mother in the early 1960’s then going on to performing duties for the next three decades that earned her a Silver Beaver Award. She also found time to provide transportation for the elderly in the FISH program and worked part-time as a school assistant in both the private and public sectors. Mrs. Wilkens spent her spare time studying genealogy regarding her Scottish-Irish heritage. According to her family, she made several trips to Europe to visit the "old homestead" and meet her long-lost relatives. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Louis, her sons: Thomas of Maryland, William of New York and Kenneth of Arizona, her daughter Audrey of New York; eight grandchildren and two sisters, Beatrice Bonner of New Jersey and Irene Enright of New York. She was predeceased by her parents, Beatrice and William Cavanaugh.
