Babylon Beautification Society Country Fair coming September 18th

The Babylon Beautification Society is the granddaddy of all country fairs on Long Island, and this year it celebrates 32 years of fairs. Traditionally, the fair is held the first Sunday after Labor Day, but this year, out of respect for people who want to observe 9/11, the fair will be held Sunday, Sept. 18, with opening ceremonies beginning at noon on the gazebo at Argyle Boat Basin.

Other fairs have copied the format of the Babylon Country Fair, but none can compare to a day near the waters of Argyle Lake shopping among 280 country vendors offering everything from handmade jewelry to pottery to baby clothes and dolls and much more.

No other fair can boast a gazebo alongside a boat basin, where fairgoers can sit and listen to performers such as Babylon’s own Joel Sikowitz and his Swing Band, or local resident Christy Reinert singing the Star Spangled Banner, or classical violinist James Graseck, the steel band, "Steel Impressions," and song stylist JC. Local girls performing Irish step dances to traditional Irish tunes is also a popular part of entertainment on the gazebo. This year, a quintet called The Fifth Edition will perform songs from the 60s and 70s.

As always, the food booths surrounding the gazebo will offer delicious food and beverages to tempt every palate. Sausage and peppers heroes, hot dogs, hamburgers, deli sandwiches, wurst, beer and ice cream are just a few of the choices. For adults, there’s entertainment and shopping, but for the little ones, there’s the always-popular Children’s Area, where games of fun and chance keep them occupied for hours.

The Book Stall by the gazebo is for bibliophiles, where it’s possible to find classic, gently-used books donated by Village readers. If you can donate some books, call George Smith. The BBS Country Fair is a group effort by dozens of volunteers who give their time and energy each year to raise the funds that help keep Babylon Village so beautiful. BBS President Carley, who is in her fifth year as president, is coordinating this year’s fair, as she did last year.

Support the work of the BBS by coming to the fair Sunday, Sept. 18, and be part of a great Babylon Village tradition.
