Cross of Christ Church celebrating 80th anniversary
Cross of Christ Lutheran Church on Deer Park Avenue, Babylon, is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year. On Sunday, September 19 Cross of Christ celebrated the anniversary with a special worship service and a Rally Day picnic on the front lawn. At this worship service the congregation got to see a recent find, the return of the original altar table from 80 years ago. Cross of Christ began as First Lutheran Church 80 years ago and was located on Locust Avenue. About 40 years ago, the church moved to Deer Park Avenue and soon afterward changed its name to Cross of Christ. The building on Locust Avenue became the site of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. Robert Schomacker found the altar at the Hibernian Hall. With assistance from Senator Owen Johnson, who used to be his old Sunday School teacher, the Hibernians gave the altar to Cross of Christ. The Reverend Joanne Bond, pastor of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church stated, "We are so thankful for Mr. Schomacker, Senator Owen Johnson and the kind gentlemen of the Ancient Order of Hibernians for making the return of our church’s original altar possible. It is solid oak and it is lovely. It is wonderful to receive this altar table as we are winding down the 80th anniversary of our congregation." Following the worship service the Sunday School children marched in a parade, enjoyed pony rides, a petting zoo, cotton candy, popcorn and a barbecue picnic on the front lawn with games, crafts and many surprises. Michael Loos, Sunday School superintendent at Cross of Christ stated, "It was so gratifying to see how happy all the children were to begin the Sunday School term." Pastor Bond commented,"We are so thankful to all who assist us and make our Rally Day so great." Also on September 19, a water fountain was dedicated to the glory of God and in loving memory of Sally Goebel, in the prayer garden at Cross of Christ.
