Babylon Football: by Tony Spota The undefeated Amityville Warriors (6-0) solidified their grip on first place in Suffolk’s Division IV as they beat the Babylon Panthers 35-13, Saturday at Amityville. The Warrior ground game was in high gear, rolling up 360 yards. Tailback Darrel Young carried nine times for 199 yards and three touchdowns. Fullback Owen Martin added 84 more yards on twelve carries. They did it following the blocks of the fine interior line – from left to right, Nick Van Nostrand, James Terry, Kevin Mulhern, David Goodall and Owen Brooks. Babylon (4-2) suffered its second loss of the season. That hasn’t happened in four years. Actually, the Panthers did pretty well against a very tough defense. They had the ball for 48 plays from scrimmage to Amityville’s 37 and had 12 first downs to the Warriors 11. The Panthers had shown excellent pass defense in their prior five games and the Warriors attempted only two incompletes. But it was the explosive rushing attack that did the job. On Young’s very first carry, he followed a pair of blocks and skirted the right side 43 yards for a TD. Philip McGee kicked the first of his five extra points. Later in the first quarter with the ball on the Warrior 16-yard line, Young burst through the left side, spun out of two tackles, broke right and raced 84 yards for his second tally. Babylon answered that one with a 70-yard march on 15 plays capped with fullback Evan Brander smashing in from the 1-foot line behind Peter Armata and Matt Martinez. Mike Parrinello kicked the extra point. Amåityville would score twice more before halftime. They drove 60 yards on six plays with Quarterback Brian Clinton scraping the right side to run it in from the 7. Later, Everette Benjamin intercepted a pass at the Babylon 29 and hauled it for a TD. Babylon then went from their own 26 to the Warrior 12. The key play was a square out from Parrinello to tight end Josh Carlock who gathered it in at the Warrior 47 and ran it down to the 19. But Amityville stopped the drive with an interception in the end zone and they led 28-7 at the half. The two picks were the only turnovers in the game. Young added his third TD on a 12 yard run to cap a 59 yard drive. Babylon took to the air for its final possession going 76 yards on 7 plays. Parrinello hit Mike Breitfeller on a right fly for 18 and again on a left fly for 36. He completed to Rich Froehlich for 19 and the Panthers had first and goal at the 1. Brander vaulted over the left side for his second TD. An attempted pass for 2 went incomplete. Statwise, Parrinello was 6 of 13 for 117 yards passing, Brian Khan had 18 carries for 70 yards and Brander 19 for 62. Saturday, Babylon hosts the Bayport Phantoms (0-6) at Williams Field. Game time is listed at 1:30 pm. Bayport was the only team to beat the Panthers last year before the two met in the county final, won by Babylon 27-13.
