Reader pleased with Kerry’s choice of VP
Dear Editor:

I was very excited by Senator John Kerry’s selection of Senator John Edwards as running mate. When I first saw Mr. Edwards in an interview with Chris Matthews last summer, I felt as if I had been awakening from a deep sleep similar to "old Rip Van Winkle." At last there was someone on the political scene who inspired hope. I had not felt that way since I was a young girl about to graduate grammar school and was already beginning to campaign for Senator Robert F. Kennedy as he made his bid for the Presidency. He too was full of hope. My dreams were shattered when my little clock radio went off on the morning of June 6, 1968 announcing Mr. Kennedy had been shot.

I had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Edwards this winter when he was running in the primaries at a rally at Hofstra University in February. He came on time and when he walked into that room, it lit up, he had the magic. He spoke about his journey from a working class family and how his dad worked in a textile mill and his mom worked in the post office. He told us he was the proud product of public schools. Mr. Edwards was the first one of his family to go to college and how he worked his way through. He saw his hometown devastated by job layoffs as industries moved their operations overseas. The Senator spoke about how it was becoming increasingly more difficult for the working class. He spoke of how every American deserves equal opportunity to succeed and to be heard. The crowd became energized by his spark and charisma.

At the end of the rally I waited outside to see him leave. As he entered the van that was transporting him to the airport I called to him "Good Luck Mr. Edwards," at that point he got out of the van and turned to me and said "Thank you." He’s also a gentleman.

Our generation has been jaded by the atrocities we have seen, beginning with the assassination of JFK, the Vietnam War, Watergate, political scandals galore, the November election of 2000, September 11, 2001 and now the war in Iraq. I had begun to lose hope in the political system.

My faith in the Democratic Party has been renewed; I salute Mr. Kerry for taking a chance on Mr. Edwards. He is a new energy beholding to no one.

It is time for a change.

"Each time a person stands up for an idea,

Or acts to improve the lots of others...

He sends forth a tiny ripple of hope

And crossing each other from a million

different centers of energy and daring.

Those ripples build a current that can sweep down.

The mightiest walls of oppression and

resistance."

- Robert F. Kennedy
